The Danube Delta was declared a biosphere reserve by the Romanian government in 1990 and was included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites in 1991. The Delta lies on the Black Sea coast, at the culmination of the Danube River through its 2840-km. journey eastward through Europe.
